5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and then some! Plus an update..., October 29, 2005
This review is from: Lodge Logic L410 Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill (Kitchen)
I ordered this heavy (33 pounds) little jewel from Amazon a week ago, got it much earlier than expected and tried it out the day I got it. I now have 4 grills: An "oil barrel" type that is perfect for when the family tribe shows up, 2 Weber kettle types in different sizes for weekend entertaining and now the Lodge.

I've had several cast aluminum discount store hibachi's over the years and after the wooden handles fall off, the legs become impossible to tighten and then the "adjustable" supports for the grill crack. I don't see that happening with this hibachi.

Let the grill pre-heat, spray it with PAM and then enjoy the meal. The heat is even, cooking times may be a bit faster than you think, but the dish will be excellent.

HOWEVER! If one is cooking on a wooden deck, as I do, invest in some bricks or concrete pavers to go under the feet. Like all cast iron, this sucker retains heat and you don't want to burn your house down while entertaining... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Grill for Steaks and Burgers, April 20, 2006

This review is from: Lodge Logic L410 Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill (Kitchen)
A great little grill! Though I grew up with weber, kettle type grills, and even tried a trash-picked gas grill, I have never used a grill that cooks so consistently well.

I use mine with hardwood charcoal -- this gets the temperature hot, fast. As soon as the charcoal is lit up I spread the coals outward, drop the grill on top (on the high side of the legs), and let it warm up for a couple minutes. Once the cast iron is warmed up the heat radiates evenly across the cooking surface. To check the temp, I hold my hand 4 inches over the top of the grill -- if I can hold it there for more than a couple seconds, it is not hot enough. Without adding charcoal, I usually have just enough time to do two batches on the grill.

For steak, I leave the meat on for four minutes each side. When I pull it off, it has a nice crispy crust, and a perfect pink inside. When I cook burgers, I leave them on five minutes each side. And, chicken, I'll take a boneless, skinless... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Rescued from the Trash Pile!, August 22, 2005
This review is from: Lodge Logic L410 Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill (Kitchen)
One of my friends received this as a gift to use for tailgating parties. After a few uses, he decided it took to long to cool off, was to hard to clean and had put it back in the box with the intention of setting it out with the trash! Fortunately before he did, he saw me looking at it on this website and asked if I planned on buying it. I said yes and he said don't because he had one that he was going to throw away. If I didn't mind it being used and a little rusty, I could have his. I took it. It was rusted but I scrubbed it, oiled all the parts, and seasoned it in the oven (it was still cold outside so I couldn't fire it up)!

This little grill came in so handy when we bought another house in the spring and removed the stove to make way for the new one. I cooked on it everyday. What my friend found as a disadvantage, I found as an advantage, it stays hot for a long time!

I grilled everything, half smokes, kabobs, burgers, chicken, veggies, fish, etc... Read more

Lodge Sportsman's Grill Cover

Customer Rating :
Rating: 4.1

List Price : $16.00 Price : $14.54
hibachi grill

Product Description

This grill cover is constructed of heavy duty black polyester with PVC backing and elastic shock cord. Designed to fit the Lodge Sportsman's Grill hibachi style charcoal grill.

Amazon.com Review

This waterproof, custom-sized cover stretches to fit over the 19-by-10-by-8-inch Lodge Sportsman's grill, a hibachi-style grill made of heavy cast iron with legs. Since the grill is a little heavy to haul inside and back out to the patio for every barbecue party, this cover allows the grill to stay outdoors protected from rain and rust. Handy for camping trips too, when rain is in the forecast, the cover is made of heavy-duty black polyester, textured on the outside and lined with smooth PVC. The shock-cord edge pulls wide and snaps into place rather like a shower cap. Any soot, dirt, or moisture that accumulates on the cover can be easily wiped off with a sponge. --Ann Bieri

  • Waterproof oblong cover protects Lodge's cast-iron Sportman's grill
  • Constructed of heavy-duty polyester with PVC backing
  • Shock-corded edge stretches to fit tightly
  • Grill measures 19 by 10 by 8 inches
  • Soot or moisture wipes off

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok but it eventually fades and leaks, September 24, 2008

This review is from: Lodge Sportsman's Grill Cover (Lawn & Patio)
I never thought I would write a review of a grill cover, but Amazon dared me! Here's the skinny. The cover fits tightly but it is a tad short to cover the legs all the way down to their tips with its strong elastic edge. No big deal, the cast iron legs are not in danger of rusting out. I've had mine out on the patio in the Kansas sun for two summers and it has faded to a gray color on top, still black on the bottom, no big deal from my view either. But one little annoyance is that the seams on the fabric (all the way around the top edge when it is on) leak. So in a heavy rain water will drip inside and lead to surface rusting. That kind of defeats the purpose of the cover. This can probably be solved with the use of tent seam sealer. Are there awards for this kind of vital, investigative consumer reporting? The grill is great!

(Husband writing review:) I use my Lodge Sportsman as often as possible, but sometimes it still has to go into storage for a while. This is a rugged cover that is custom fit, and I appreciate how much cleaner my grill is when I pull it out. Keeps the dust and cobwebs to a minimum; keeps the rain out if you forget and leave it outside. It's well worth it if you're going to invest in the grill.

I got both the grill and this cover last week. Contrary to what one of the reviews says here, it fits perfectly with no shortage at the bottom. I have provided my own photograph at the top of this page that shows the cover on my grill. The elastic at the bottom of the cover allows it to pull tight UNDER the feet of the grill allowing very little chance of rain getting directly on the grill. You're still going to have to put up with the possibility of rust on the grill simply from moisture in the air, but at least it won't be raining on it.

Craftsmanship of wooden platter is not the best. Had to refinish the bottom of the platter and replace the bearings that make it rotate. This item is not worth the price.

We are happy with the platter but the center grill is so small that we cannot find any sterno that it fits. It is also rusting after the first wash so we cannot lay food on it.
